Abstract

Abstract: The Sejarah Melayu , or Malay Annals, is arguable the most important piece of historical literature produced in or around the Malay Peninsula. Several manuscripts, some with significant variations, exist in archival collections. The identity of the author is an open question, and individuals tentatively identified as the author were apparently copyists, although some of them added or deleted material. The following article assesses the authorship of the Sejarah Melayu and the circumstances surrounding its composition. The tentative conclusion is that it was not composed as a single work but combines material from earlier manuscripts prepared by different authors.
