Abstract
The current study conducts an empirical linguistic inquiry into seven Chinese trainee translators’ professional practice in a Chinese-to-English news translation task. The ultimate goal is to investigate how critical discourse analysis (CDA) can be applied to analyze the source text (ST) and evaluate the criticality of the translators’ language awareness (LA). The findings show that CDA is effective in ST analysis and strategy evaluation, thus to optimize news translation results by raising the translator’s critical language awareness. However, the participants’ LA in this study has been found not to be sufficiently critical in their translation processes. The research findings have serious implications in translator training, suggesting that CDA principles could and should be widely used in news translation research and training program design and implementation.
