Abstract

This issue is brought to you ahead of World Hospice and Palliative Care day on 6 October 2007. The day aims to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the globe, with a number of concerts and fundraising events taking place. The theme this year is palliative care across the ages, from children to older people. According to the WHO, the world’s population is ageing; in 2000, there were 600 million people aged 60 years and over, and it is predicted that these numbers will continue to increase year on year. Fifty to 75% of these will require palliative care (WHO, 2007). It is imperative that people with a life-limiting illness receive the care they need and deserve; unfortunately, this does not always happen, particularly in developing countries where hospice services are in short supply (Wright et al, 2006).
