Abstract
- Contemporary society and religion are facing the challenge to overcome the inherent reductionism of the sociological theories which conceive secularity as secularism. This task requires to rethink the nature, importance and mutual links of both reason and faith. In order to do this, the author examines the proposals made by C. Taylor, J. Habermas and P. Donati. Contemporary society has to rethink its modern legacy, acknowledging the positive elements that deserve to be encouraged and developed. Religion needs to reflect on its essence with regard to its task in society and the conditions for presenting itself authentically in a contemporary context. Romera underlines the need for a concept of reason which is not limited to Zweckrationalität, but remains open to the contribution made by religion. In so doing, two important requirements must be met: the essential accessibility of reason to all members of civil society and the capability of faith to provide reasons for its own belief without abandoning its transcendental foundation. Keywords: enlightenment, reason, transcendence, post-secular, metaphysics
