Abstract

This essay discusses why it is important for messaging apps to have end-to-end encryption built into, and be default enabled, to ensure protection of personal information. The raging discussion became a legal tussle with the 2016 San Bernardino shooting, when Apple refused to provide access to encrypted messages to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation. Encryption ensures that cyber criminals, hackers and eavesdroppers cannot read the messages or hold the sender for ransom. End-to-end encrypted messaging apps, such as WhatsApp are much more secure, as compared to Google’s chat service which uses SMS technology to send and receive messages.
