Abstract

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate)-poly(4-hydroxybutyl acrylate) nano-objects are prepared by aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) using an ionic RAFT agent.

Highlights

  • Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) offers a robust and highly versatile synthetic route to a wide range of welldefined block copolymer nano-objects in the form of concentrated colloidal dispersions.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] PISA involves growing an insoluble block from one end of a soluble precursor block in a suitable solvent

  • The HOOC–PHEA73–PHBA217 nanoparticles proved to be sensitive to added salt, with incipient flocculation occurring in the presence of 20–60 mM KCl owing to charge screening

  • The synthesis of new all-acrylic PHEAx–PHBAy diblock copolymer nano-objects has been achieved via an efficient one-pot aqueous PISA protocol

Summary

Introduction

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) offers a robust and highly versatile synthetic route to a wide range of welldefined block copolymer nano-objects in the form of concentrated colloidal dispersions.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] PISA involves growing an insoluble block from one end of a soluble precursor block in a suitable solvent. As far as we are aware, such dilution instability is seldom reported for PISA-synthesized nano-objects.[45] this explanation is consistent with the relatively narrow DLS particle size distributions, small z-average diameters and the linear increase in apparent nanoparticle diameter with PHBA DP.[75] we have recently reported that the structuredirecting PHBA block is only weakly hydrophobic.[42,50]
