Abstract
Rafael Espada was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He earned his MD degree at the Universidad San Carlos in Guatemala City and trained as a thoracic surgeon at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX, USA), where he is currently a clinical professor of surgery. He is also on the executive committee of Methodist Hospital and its DeBakey Heart Center, and serves as medical director of international programmes and chair of the international operations committee. Espada founded UNICAR, a cardiovascular unit for open-heart surgery in rural Guatemala, in 1996. His honours include the Helping Hands Medical Missions of the United States 2002 humanitarian award and the International Rotary Society's Paul Harris 2002 Award for humanitarian efforts in Guatemala.
