Abstract

The techniques for radon measurements making use of solid-state nuclear track detectors are widely used in the evaluation of radon concentrations in dwellings. Their simplicity, versatility and low-cost facilitate their use in large-scale surveys. However, great discrepancies still occur within the same laboratory or among various laboratories in the evaluation of integrated radon activity owing to different detector treatments or reading techniques. This has triggered the development of a precise calibration factor determination and international intercomparison exercises. This paper reports on the determination of the calibration factor for an 'open' type radon dosemeter based on the use of an LR-115 type II detector when read with three different reading techniques. Emphasis is also put on the regular checking of the calibration factor value even when the detector treatment procedures are kept unchanged.
