Abstract

The results of 90Sr analysis of soil, grass and sheep bone from twelve stations in England and Wales are given. The 90Sr in the top 4 in. of undisturbed soil in July 1956 ranged from 1·9 to 10·0 me/km 2, depending on the rainfall. The 90Sr activity of herbage and of sheep bone showed a wider range, samples from acid hill soils being relatively more active. Milk from Somerset had a median activity of 4·4 ,μμc 90Sr/g Ca in 1956, compared with 4·1 in 1955. Human-bone specimens obtained in 1956 showed 90Sr activity depending on age. The average level in children under 5 was 0·7 μμc 90Sr/g Ca and the average bone dose 2 mrad/year.
