Abstract
1. Plain films are usually of limited value in the study of salivary gland tumors. Soft tissue swelling or, rarely, erosion of the mandible may be seen. 2. Sialography is of value in differentiating salivary gland tumors from other causes of swelling in or near the salivary glands. 3. The sialographic picture of an intrinsic salivary gland tumor is displacement of the ducts around a mass. This may be associated with a defect in acinar filling. 4. In most instances, we have not been able to differentiate benign from malignant tumors by sialography. 5. The sialographic picture of chronic inflammatory disease of the salivary glands is characterized by "sialectasis." 6. Radioisotopic scanning of the salivary glands using technetium 99m pertechnetate is a relatively new procedure, but one which may aid in the diagnosis of tumors.
