Abstract

A sensitive radioimmunoassay for ovine beta-lipotropic hormone (beta-LPH) has been developed. Free and antibody-bound 125I-beta-LPH were separated by the double antibody method and with dextran-coated charcoal. As little as 0.5 ng of beta-LPH could be measured. The concentration of beta-LPH in sheep serum is low. The hormone was detected in a total extract of a human pituitary gland, but not in human serum. Porcine beta-LPH cross-reacts strongly with sheep beta-LPH. Rudman's peptide 7D6, Trygstad's lipid-mobilizing factor and Chretien's human lipolytic fractions had slight cross-reactivity. ACTH, betah-MSH, alpha-MSH and other Trygstad's fractions were not bound by our anti-ovine beta-LPH rabbit antiserum. (Endocrinology 91: 1004, 1972)
