Abstract
According to a report published in 1992, the number of thyroid cancer cases in children in Belarus has increased more than 10-fold overall and more than 20-fold in some areas. The increase started in 1990, 4 years after the Chernobyl catastrophe. The histological diagnosis of the cases has been verified by pathologists from western Europe. The report has met with great scepticism in the scientific community. Our intention is to comment on the criticisms made of the report.
