Abstract

Radiofrequency ablation is a curative procedure for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias (PSVT, also known as PAT). The success rate is over 90%, and the complication rate is very low. Patients requiring long term drug treatment, and patients with PSVT and Wolff- Parkinson White syndrome on ECG, should be considered for this procedure. It is cost effective and improves quality of life. Atrioventricular nodal ablation and permanent pacemaker implantation is effective in heart rate control in patients with drug refractory paroxysmal or permanent atrial fibrillation. This procedure does not alter the requirement for anticoagulation. Atrial flutter responds well to radiofrequency ablation, as do many atrial tachycardias and idiopathic ventricular tachycardias.
