Abstract

In the United Kingdom, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) is an authorizing department for routine disposals of low-level radioactive waste from the major civil nuclear establishments in England and Wales. In addition to requiring nuclear operators to undertake environmental monitoring around their establishments, including both marine and agricultural produce of local importance, validation monitoring in the terrestrial environment has recently been extended by MAFF into a fully independent and comprehensive surveillance program for agricultural food chains at each site. This Terrestrial Radioactivity Monitoring Program (TRAMP) and the procedure for calculating upper estimates of exposures are described and emergency monitoring requirements are reviewed in the light of experience following the Chernobyl accident.
