Abstract

In Belgium, radioactive waste management is entrusted by law to a national agency, whose competences include the development of disposal solutions. Two projects are currently going on, viz., near-surface disposal for low-level and short-lived waste and geological disposal in clay for long-lived and/or high-level waste (vitrified waste or spent fuel). The paper outlines the main features of both projects: historical background, basic concept, current status, and future implementation prospects. Taking into account only the technical requirements, near-surface disposal could become operational within the coming 4 to 5 years, and geological disposal, around the year 2035
