Abstract

The paper offers an interpretation of auroral echoes observed at Jodrell Bank on two occasions in 1953. It is concluded that in each case the echoes are due to direct, non-specular reflection from an auroral arc extending more than 1000 km along a parallel of geomagnetic latitude. The reflection apparently occurs in a region of the arc of limited vertical extent at a height of about 125 km. The observed line of sight velocities of intense reflecting centres are interpreted as true motions along the arc with velocities of the order of 1–2 km sec −1.
