Abstract

A series of maps is presented which show the structure and variability of the components of the CO condensation Cep A East. New observations made at 20 cm, 6 cm, and 2 cm show that there have been changes of at least 30 percent in the total flux from at least four of about 14 compact H II regions in Cep A East during 1982-1986. The results for one highly variable component indicate that large variations in ionization can possibly occur in a one-year period. The spectral indices of four of the more compact components indicate optically thick regions in their cores; together with the presence of OH and H2O maser emission, this indicates that some compact components are internally excited by starlike objects. The compact components probably represent the initial stages of formation of early main-sequence stars with mass greater than five solar. 26 references.
