Abstract

At high altitude location, the corona discharge around conductor surface of AC power lines are severe, and the generated radio interference levels are serious. It has become an important factor in restricting the conductor selection of AC power lines. Large section conductor is a good choice to meet the limit of RI threshold for ultra-high-voltage (UHV) power lines. However, there are few RI data of large section bundled conductor at high altitude, which cannot provide reference for the selection of suitable conductors for power utility companies. In order to investigate the RI characteristics of bundled conductors with large cross section at high altitude, an UHV corona cage (8m × 8m × 35m, altitude: 2261m) was employed and three bundled conductors (8 × LGJ 720, 8 × LGJ 900 and 10 × LGJ 720) were tested. The RI performances of three types of bundled conductors were measured in fair weather and different rainy conditions (1.5~18 mm/h). Then the influence of conductor electric field and rain rate on RI characteristics was analyzed. The results concluded in this paper can provide important reference data for high-altitude power lines construction.
