Abstract

In Northern Ireland, since 1979, in Derry, the British Broadcasting Corporation has begun an original and unique experiment : a community radio station : Radio Foyle. It originated with a real need for local news and local programmes for a specific audience. Radio Foyle received the full backing of the BBC NI Controller, James Hawthorne. Following 6 years of broadcasting, the station has now found its proper rhythm with 20 hours of original programmes broadcast 5 days a week (4 hours per day). Catholics and protestants alike appreciate «their» radio where they meet and where they create their own programmes. Joe Mahon, Head of Radio Foyle, is sure that his professional team can meet any criticism. This original experiment is not without political ties.
