Abstract

After the Second World War, the German radio and TV industry experienced a boom. Not only did it dominate the domestic market, its success abroad flourished as well. In the 1960s however, the tide turned. Competition was heightened by foreign manufacturers who made headway in both the German and other markets. Initially the German producers managed to maintain their position, mostly as a result of their colour TV sets. Increasingly however, they were elbowed out of the market, so that the few remaining manufacturers only occupied niche markets. Official statistics from the Federal Office of Statistics on production and imports were analysed for this paper.
