Radio-anatomical study of the human femur

Abstract

The authors have studied, on 25 femurs, the superior extremity and thickness of the cortex and diameter of the medullary canal, comparing the anatomical measurements with radiological measurements using metallic pointers. More than 200 measurements were carried out, producing some 5,000 values which were analysed by computer. The results provide useful data for the surgeon engaged in centro-medullary pinning operations and in arthroplasty of the hip and knee.
