Abstract

Pyridine dicyanomethylide (PDMY) initiated radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in dimethylformamide was investigated dilatometrically at 85 +− 0.1°C under nitrogen. Analysis of kinetic data and other parameters indicates that the system follows non-ideal kinetics because of degradative chain transfer; the kinetic orders of the overall polymerization with respect to PDMY and MMA are 0.87 +− 0.02 and 1.14 +− 0.02 respectively. The overall activation energy and the average value of k p 2 k t are 64.1 kJ/mol and 2.8 × 10 −2 1 mol −1 sec − 1 resp.
