Abstract
1. Twenty-one patients with carcinoma of the vocal cord were treated at the University of California Hospital, San Francisco, with 1 mev. irradiation and a protraction of the over-all treatment time of 7 weeks for 5,500 r midline dose or 8 weeks for 6,000 r, an average of 53 days for 6,000 r instead of the previous average protraction of 40 days for 6,000 r (30 per cent). With this greater protraction, morbidity was markedly reduced; formation of a false membrane and the previously common late edema were not observed.2. Seven of 9 carcinomas, Stage 1, and 7 of 12, Stage 11, were controlled.3. Cordectomy in 2 patients with Stage 1 uncontrolled or recurrent disease was done in lieu of total laryngectomy, without any surgical complications or recurrent disease to date. In 4 instances of uncontrolled disease in Stage 11, laryngectomies were done without ensuing complications.
