Abstract
Absorption and scattering by dust grains affect all observable properties of galaxies, including the observed kinematics. We demonstrate how kinematical information can be included into the radiative transfer framework, and argue that the Monte Carlo method is a very elegant method to approach such radiative transfer problems. We present the SKIRT code, a new Monte Carlo radiative transfer code that is developed to calculate the observed kinematics of dusty galaxies. As an application we demonstrate that dust absorption and scattering have significant effects on the observed kinematics of elliptical galaxies. In particular, scattering by dust grains can form an alternative explanation for the stellar kinematical evidence of dark matter haloes around elliptical galaxies.
