THE maximum lifetime of a metallic ion, M+, in the upper atmosphere is believed to be limited by radiative recombination, M+ + e→M + hν. The rate coefficient, γr, for this process is about (ref. 1) 3 × 10−12 cm3 sec−1 at 300° K.
