Abstract
The expected electromagnetic field due to an arbitrary current element placed parallel to and over a surface of an arbitrary intrinsic impedance is examined. The formulation of the problem is similar to that of Sommerfeld, involving radiation in media comprising two semi-infinite half-spaces, such as air and the Earth, the relative intrinsic impedance of one being considerably smaller than that of the other. The radiation characteristics in air and the nature of the field distribution change significantly as the highly conducting Earth's surface is replaced by a high intrinsic impedance surface or by a surface that has the same intrinsic impedance as that of the free space, the permeability and dielectric constant being different.
