Abstract

Radiation effects on quartz oscillators and quartz resonator units fabricated from unswept supreme Q quartz have been evaluated. The changes in oscillator frequency caused by gamma rays are within 5 ppm. They originate from changes in resonator frequency. The effects of other components are negligible. Infrared absorption spectra of irradiated quartz blanks demonstrate a strong relation between resonator frequency changes and defect concentration in quartz. There is little difference between gamma ray and electron irradiation if the electrons have enough energy to penetrate the quartz blank.
