Abstract

In pulse radiolysis and steady state radiolysis experiments with optical absorption spectroscopy the radiation-induced formation and decay of anionic species of maleic anhydride (MA) in rigid 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) solutions were investigated at low temperatures. Absorption bands in the u.v. and n.i.r. regions were observed in the pulse radiolysis experiments and in agreement with literature data assigned to monomeric radical anions and radicals and to dimeric radical anions of MA, respectively. Additional absorption bands have been detected in the vis. range but could not be ascribed. The formation and decay of the radical anions and radicals were characterized kinetically.
