Abstract

Genome of Culex quinquefasciatus origin was introduced by backcrossing into the cytoplasm of Cx. pipiens form molestus . Males of the resulting synthetic strain showed cytoplasmic incompatibility in crosses to Cx. quinquefasciatus females. Sterility of synthetic-strain females that might be inadvertently released in genetic control programs could be ensured by irradiation with 5,000 rad of gamma rays on the 2nd day of pupal life. This form of genetic control appears to be the best currently available for these mosquitoes.
