Abstract
Radiation pretreatment of cellulosic wastes such as chaff in the presence of various acids was studied. The effect of radiation degradation on chaff was evaluated by measurement of the fragility and glucose yield in subsequent crushing and enzymatic hydrolysis after irradiation. The glucose yield in the presence of sulphuric acid solution increased with increasing irradiation dose. The fraction of powder (below 115 mesh) and the glucose yield increased with increasing concentration of acids such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and acetic acid, in which hydrochloric acid was the most effective for the acceleration of the enzymatic hydrolysis.
