Abstract

Investigations were carried out on the morphology of particles produced in the early stages of radiation-induced heterophase polymerization of acrylonitrile in quiescent conditions over a wide temperature range both in bulk and with addition of a solvent or a comonomer. The data were compared with the corresponding data obtained in the polymerization of vinyl chloride, producing an amorphous polymer, taking into account also the kinetic behaviours of the two polymerization systems. The particle morphologies in the two systems were quite similar at low polymerization temperatures but there were considerable differences when higher temperatures were involved. This change was interpreted on the basis of differences in compatibility between the liquid phase and the polymer particle phase for the two systems. In order to account for the two different kinetic behaviours, a two-phase polymerization model was formulated and also a polymerization model in which the surface of the polymer particles was the locus of polymerization.
