Twenty-three patients had pericardial disease, including acute pericarditis (15 cases), chronic pericardial effusion (12 cases), and chronic constrictive pericarditis (10 cases).Pericardial effusion developed during an episode of acute pericarditis in 11 cases, and 6 patients had cardiac tamponade. The pericardial fluid was usually bloody, with a high protein content. Ten patients with acute pericarditis recovered, but five progressed to chronic constrictive pericardial disease.
