Abstract

The effect of room-temperature γ-ray radiation on the stress—strain behavior of prestrained NaCl single crystals has been investigated. After irradiation, a large increase in macroscopic flow stress and an initial ``soft'' region have been observed. Experimental data on the increase in flow stress vs γ dose are reported for different levels of prestraining. Finally, possible hardening mechanisms are explored in the light of experimental behavior.
