Abstract

In extending recent work on the problem of radiation emission from pulses in circularly bent fibres, we now study this problem for pulses in fibres with helical cores, using the volume current method. Although much of the analysis presented here parallels that developed for the circularly bent fibre, certain elements of this problem are studied here for the very first time. Although the present work is primarily concerned with the radiation due to the pure bending loss mechanism, we also consider the radiation which, as has been suggested, can result from the constructive interference of the fields between neighbouring windings of the helix.
