Abstract

Recent investigations by the NRPB in a number of industries have shown that the use of feed materials with relatively low activity concentrations of the naturally occurring radionuclides can result in enhanced levels of activity in areas of the plant. These in turn create the potential for significant exposure. The main exposure pathways is that of inhalation, and doses can be estimated from air sampling data. The uncertainties in these dose estimations can be considerable, but in the industries studied in detail it can be said that annual doses to workers are lower than the relevant dose limits and are probably of the order of a few millisieverts per year or less. Industries where naturally occurring radionuclides may present a potential radiological hazard are tentatively identified.
