Abstract

Polyoma T and its host mouse embryo cells were irradiated with Co 60 radiation both alone and as infectious complexes. The virus alone is very radiation resistant and in the presence of radical scavengers has a Do of 4.09 × 10 5 rads. In contrast the cellular capacity has a Do of 5440 rads. Infectious complexes of virus infected cells have a Do after infection of 7800 rads. This value increases progressively during the eclipse period and after 19 hr. approaches the value for free virus. These differences are interpreted as changes in the “capacity” of the host cell during the eclipse period of virus maturation.
