Abstract

Thermal curing of epoxies and their composites is not an energy efficient and eco-friendly approach. As a green alternative, the radiation curing of epoxy composites and coatings got much attention among researchers. The current chapter discussions the various aspects of radiation curing of epoxies and their composites using both ionizing and heating radiations. This chapter begins with a basic discussion on the chemistry and generally accepted mechanism of the radiation curing in epoxies. The possible mechanisms of interaction between different radiation sources and chemically different epoxies are also highlighted. Thereafter, the chapter gives a brief discussion on various radiation sources used for the curing of epoxies and their composites. The radiation curing of fiber-reinforced epoxy composites, epoxy nanocomposites, and epoxy-based coatings has been discussed. The role of macro-fibers and nanofillers on the mechanism and kinetics of radiation induced curing of epoxy has been emphasized. The final performance of the radiation cured epoxy and their composites have been reviewed. Finally, the advantages of radiation curing of epoxy composites over thermal curing are discussed.
