Abstract

It is observed that the γ radiolysis of dilute aqueous sulphuric acid solutions of Eu(III) ions in the presence of 2-propanol leads to the precipitation of dissolved europium as europous sulphate with G=5.9. Pulse radiolytic evidence is provided for the mechanism involving the reduction of Eu(III) by (CH 3) 2-Ċ-OH radicals produced in situ. Use of this observation towards a feasible separation method of europium from a mixture of lanthanides in aqueous solution is discussed.
