Abstract

The problem of excitation of a body of revolution consisting of a homogeneous dielectric sphere surrounded by an inhomogeneous dielectric layer is considered. The body is excited by a radial electric dipole arranged on the axis of revolution. A new numerical algorithm developed for solution of the problem is based on the hybrid projection method involving projection of the fields on transverse spherical functions combined with application of the one-dimensional finite element method in the projection form over the radial coordinate. The algorithm is also modified for the case when the internal sphere is perfectly conducting. A number of numerical results characterizing both the effectiveness of the method itself and the influence of different parameters of the body, including the case when the sphere is surrounded by a plasma layer, on the dipole radiation pattern are presented and discussed.
