Abstract
The standard model of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics describes non-relativistic quantum matter, such as atoms and molecules, (minimally) coupled to the quantized electromagnetic field. This model provides mathematically solid and physically reasonable foundations for a description of all physical processes arising from the interaction of matter and radiation. We review basic notions, results and techniques in the theory of radiation and scattering, specifically, Rayleigh scattering, within this model. We also describe some ideas entering the proofs. This review is an extended version of the talk given at the Conference “Quantum Mathematical Physics”, Regensburg, September/October, 2014.
