Abstract
In this paper, the role of radiating discontinuity (RD) in engineering or reshaping complex propagation constant, i.e., attenuation and phase constants of leaky-wave antennas is explored and presented. To be more specific, the attenuation constant of the leaky mode is related to the real part of the RD's impedance/admittance while the phase constant can be manipulated by the imaginary part of that parameter. As a result, leaky-wave antennas possessing either stable radiation performance or alternatively rapid beam-scanning characteristics can be realized by engineering the RD. Both are separately examined and demonstrated in this work by practical examples.
