Abstract

Analysis of actual radar data of upper atmospheric phenomena indicates that neglecting refraction of electromagnetic waves causes the computed altitudes of the reflecting structures to be overestimated. Curves of target altitude against elevation angle are presented. They reveal that it is unlikely that the atmospheric phenomena occur at altitudes below 20 km. The Earth equivalent radius factor is proposed as an indicator of the plausibility of the computed altitudes.
