Radar data in NWP models, an outline of COST-717 working group 3

Abstract

The assimilation of radar data into operational NWP models is in its infancy, but there is much potential for growth in this field. The COST-717 Action Working Group 3 entitled “Using Radar Information for Assimilation into Atmospheric Models” offers a framework for European radar and NWP scientists to realise this potential. The working group is organised into 3 areas of activity embracing a review of the subject, radar data issues and assimilation issues. The structure of the group's plans is outlined and examples given of projects which will contribute to COST-717 objectives.
