Abstract
RACISM AND NON-RACISM A lexical analysis of the specific vocabulary used in some articles of the french press dealing with immigrants and immigration (1974-1984) opposes the « extremes » to the « centre ». If the far right press (Militant et Le National) and the leftest press (Lutte Ouvrière) are characterized by the strictness and coherence of their standpoint, be it nationalist, or racist, or classist, the discourse of Le Figaro, Le Quotidien, Le Nouvel Observateur, Libération, L'Unitéand L'Humanité-Dimanche is slightly out of focus and deals with the living and working conditions given to the immigrants more than with immigrants and immigration themselves. This discourse, ill-documented, is prone to many semantic skidding about the noun designation.
