• Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) rates are steadily climbing. • Studies have documented higher rates of SMM in minority populations. • Black women were more likely than White women to experience any SMM. • Black women were more likely than White women to receive general anesthesia for cesarean delivery. • Black women were more likely to receive no analgesia for vaginal delivery.
