Abstract

With the growth of tensions associated with racial violence in the past decade, much attention llas been paid to racial conflict and social scientists have increasingly turned to societies whose dominant mores of social action are racially determined in an attempt to understand the determinants of racial clashes.l By studying pluralistic societies, such as South Africa and the British West Indies,2 researchers have been made aware of the intricate nature of social interaction across colour lines.
