Abstract

The years 1925 and 1926 marked the high point of NEP and were characterized by steady and sustained economic growth. The ‘scissors crisis’ was long past. Agriculture prospered and industry swiftly attained pre-war levels of production. In this period of relative calm, NKRKI faced serious difficulties in developing its work in economic management. However, economic problems persisted and within the party the question of future development roused heated controversy. The defeat of the Trotskyist opposition exposed serious rifts within the ruling triumvirate between Stalin and his erstwhile allies Zinoviev and Kamenev, ushering in a new phase in the struggle for the succession.
