Abstract

Post-sternotomy mediastinitis (PSM) is a serious complication of median sternotomy. When large areas of resections are performed, the use of sternal prosthesis could be considered to ensure chest wall stabilisation and cosmesis. Commonly used materials are mesh, bone grafts and titanium plates. Internationally, the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) as sternal prosthesis is rare as it is an emerging prosthesis material. We present our unit’s innovative first case of rib cage stabilisation with 3D-printed HDPE sternal body prosthesis.
