Abstract

Han Ryner is the pseudonym of the French writer Henri Ner (Nemours, Algeria, 1861–Paris, 1938), adopted as his own from 1898. This extremely prolific author published more than 50 works of fiction (novels, plays, short stories) and contributed thousands of articles to more than 250 newspapers and magazines of either an anarchist or pacifist bent, including La Patrie Humaine, La Revue anarchiste, L'Anarchie, L'Unique and Par delà la mêlée . His books have been translated into many languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, and German. An acute and caustic commentator of the foibles of French society, Ryner had contacts with several important figures belonging to the pacifist camp in the period of the entre deux guerres , such as Romain Rolland, Stephan Zweig, and Jean Giono. His philosophy is staunchly individualistic and refuses any label, including that of anarchist.
