Abstract

The R-matrix formalism relates the asymptotically-free quark-gluon degrees of freedom at short range to the hadronic degrees of freedom of confined quark-gluon clusters at long range. Application to the nucleon-nucleon system shows i) the inconsistency of the M.I.T. Bag Model with available data and ii) the Cloudy Bag Model prediction of 3S 1 and 1S 0 resonant structures near 2700 MeV mass. The splitting, width, inelasticity, two-pion production and free-quark content of these states are presented and an experimental candidate for the 1S 0 state is discussed. The 3S 1 — 3D 1 channel has good deuteron properties and strong energy dependence near the ΔΔ and NN ∗ (1440) thresholds, which may account foe the “Kamae Resonance.” The expected characteristics of q 6, q 4 q , q 2 q 2 and states with added gluons are discussed.
